Friday, January 30, 2015, 4:42:15 AM- Something new
I'm catching up with the 21st century, I got an intelligent phone, an iphone 6. This is my first smart phone. I've seen them in use and was always impressed with what they can do. Some of the apps are amazing.

Someone in status wants to see a pic of it, so here it is,

Tuesday, November 11, 2014, 8:37:00 PM- A Minor Dilemma
A woman on a food site I visit has a Meyer lemon tree (Meyer lemons are the Cadillac of lemons) and she has much more than she can use or give away locally, so she offered them to her fellow food forum rats. I was lucky enough to get my name in on time. So now the lemons are in route. She said she doesn't want anything for them but some people (including me) asked about reimbursing her for the cost of shipping. While no one is obligated to reimburse her it just seems like the right thing to do. She has sent out 15 packages total at a cost of just over $18 per package. Now, this is my question. I don't want to send a personal check so I was thinking about stuffing a $20 bill in an envelope. Chances are it will arrive to her with no problems but there is always the outside possibility of it getting lost. So I'm thinking about a gift card. But if I mail a gift card I might as well just mail the currency. Then I thought maybe an Amazon gift card that would be delivered to her via email. Easy and guaranteed instant delivery. What are your thoughts on the Amazon gift card? Good idea or not?

Just in case you're thinking this might be a scam, not to worry, I won't be sending reimbursement before the lemons are in my hands. Of course I could get a money order but I don't want to jump through hoops, just wanna get this nice lady her money back with minimal effort.

"I'd go with the Amazon card. That way you don't even have to give her your return address. I'm of the opinion that when it comes to online personal communications, the less traceable info, the better. It would be more than worth it to me just to avoid having to put my return address on the envelope.
Registered mail costs at least $4.00, a high price for sending a money order of $18.00.
Cash is cash. Once it's lost in the mail you have no recourse. Ditto a gift card. The chances of it being lost, however, are low. Companies mail checks for $100K and more and don't worry about them, but, then again, they are checks. Boy, I bet you never expected or wanted to know everything I know about mailing;)"

It took a while to happen, just a tad over 10 years. Special number counts on my profile usually escape my attention. But tonight I got 33,333 views. Maybe in another 10 I'll have 66,666.

Monday, October 20, 2014, 3:16:27 AM- Internet Shopping, 2014
I never paid attention to it before but today in the wee hours of the morning it caught my attention. An invention that might take internet shopping to a new level. What might that be, you ask? Well, let me 'splain. I found an item on Amazon that I wanted. As I was getting ready to put my finger in motion and press that familiar "one click" button I saw it. I'm sure it's been there for a while but just now I paid attention to it. You know what I'm talking about, the "same day delivery" button. Can this be true, I wondered, can I order an item in the morning and have it in my hands later that very same afternoon? And on a Sunday to boot? Well, I didn't need it today, heck, I don't even need it this week. But the allure of having it the day I ordered it was too much, this is too much like getting a pizza or a Jimmy Johns sandwich. So I did it, I pressed the same day delivery button. hehe, it was no more work than pressing any of the other shipping options buttons! At 4:10 this afternoon I had the item in my hands! What will they think of next?

Monday, September 22, 2014, 2:32:30 AM- Names
Have you ever introduced yourself to new neighbors and then promptly forgotten their names? Well, I forget names pretty easy so that is my lot. I recently got new neighbors next door, I introduced myself and then promptly forgot the man's name. Actually, maybe it just didn't register. So when he sees me he hollers out, "Hi Len ........" and I say "HI" with no name. I think he noticed that I wasn't saying his name. I remember his wife's name because I have a sister in law who has the same name. But fuck if I remember his. So today I was doing some yard work and he was out there and hollered out, "Hey Len, hey, if we ever make too much noise or if you need help with anything, just come over and say, "hey Rich......."". OK, I got it now! I think his name is Rich! Now if could remember his son's name.............

"The trick is to use the person's name right away ("Pleased to meet you, Rich..." or associate it to someone or something else (as you did with his wife's name)."

Wednesday, September 10, 2014, 6:43:54 AM- Time For A Yuk Yuk

Laugh Of The Day!
Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.' The question was worth 70 points or none at all.
One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages However, he wrote:
1) It is perfect formula for the child.
2) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3) It is always the right temperature.
4) It is inexpensive.
5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa.
6) It is always available as needed.
And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote:

7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it.
He got an A.

Sunday, September 7, 2014, 5:20:32 AM- Dad's Old Lighter
My dad passed away some years ago. One of the little mementos I have is his old cigarette lighter, a Ronson. Dad was a Ronson man, he would buy Ronson flints and lighter fluid for it. Any brand flint (i.e. Zippo) and fluid would work, but he always used the Ronson brand. I remember this lighter from when I was a little kid. It is at least 50 years old, but probably is 60 or more years. Some time ago I screwed up the flint spring and in my attempt to repair it totally destroyed the spring. I've been looking for a way to fix it, but alas there are no repair parts for it. Well, this past week I was going through the drawer where I keep it and ran across it again, so I decided to do another internet search. I found that Zippo bought out Ronson about 4 years ago, so I decided to take a look at the Zippo site and see if they have any repair parts. "We don't sell repair parts (why would they, if your Zippo ever needs repair you send it to them and they repair it for free) but if you need a flint spring let us know and we'll give you one". That was music to my ears, so to speak. The flint spring arrived in today's mail. I had to take it off the screw because the Zippo screw is a larger diameter than the Ronson, but I was able to reattach it to the Ronson screw that I still have. Now dad's old Ronson is working again, although I'm sure he'll forgive me for using a Zippo spring, flint and fluid.

A small victory, for sure, but it makes me feel good.

Sunday, August 24, 2014, 12:09:11 AM- Spider, Man!
This little guy likes to make a web on my recycle box. That means once a week it gets destroyed and he (she?) has to start over again. I guess it's all about location, location, location. I see he has a couple of victims, so maybe he knows what he's doing.

p.s. Further research, it appears to be a female Spotted Orbweaver, Neoscona crucifera.
