Reduce unused white space on "responsive" layout.

I've been using the "responsive" layout version of the site for several weeks and would like to suggest that the left side of the page uses a lot more screen real estate than is needed. I would like the ability to just show the icons and not the text. This could be either be a profile setting or a collapse arrow that would shrink that side panel from the wide "icon and text" to just the icon.
