triangles,

It has to do with the right triangle. Every triangle has three sides and here angles. In the case of a right triangle, one angle is 90 degrees (a right angle). The side opposite that 90 degree angle (or right angle) is called the hypotenuse.

The Pythagorean theorem states that if you squared the lengths off all three sides of the triangle, the sum of the squares of the shorter sides will add up to equal the square of the hypotenuse.

In other words, if the hypotenuse was side c and the other sides were labelled a and b then...

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Hope that helps grin

I'm the math nerd that will revive this old thread
Here's the "easier" geometry/picture method: Take 3 squares of any size, 1 larger than the other 2. Arrange them in a way that it creates a triangle in the middle. The sum of the area of the 2 smaller squares will equal the area of the larger square. Hence, a^2 + b^2 = c^2.

This also is a lead-in to Fermat's :Last Theorem, which states no three positive integers a, b, and c satisfy the equation a^n + b^n = c^n for any integer n>2 (n=1, n=2 are trivial & have an infinite number of solutions).
